Job Description


• Lead operation of UI's System Ops. Center, monitoring the status of the transmission and distribution system to maintain its integrity with the highest level of safety while promoting established work practices in accordance with policies and procedures.

• Lead dispatchers & field personnel during normal & emergency conditions. Evaluate transmission and distribution disturbance data, determine corrective actions and direct switching and tagging operations to issue necessary clearances.

• Provide coordination to oversee and monitor CONVEX operation of the UI Transmission System by reviewing CONVEX switching and tagging orders to ensure the safe and proper operation of transmission equipment within established limits and guidelines.

• Write switching and tagging operations for electric system transmission/distribution equipment in accordance with operating standards.

• Ensure that system operations records, maps, logs, operating instructions and procedures of the Transmission and Distribution Electric System are accurate and up to date.

• Monitors and evaluates System Operation's effectiveness, provide input on employee performance & provide skill development through on-the-job training and recommends improvement to help strengthen individual skills and knowledge.

• Communicate operational and disturbance events and equipment problems with system and maintenance engineers and other personnel.

• Represents UI on various committees and task forces to lead change towards the Division's goals and objectives, utilizing appropriate management systems and measurements.

• Continuously pursue technological advances relating to the Electric System Operations Center, to broaden the opportunities to the organization and to better serve the customer.

• Acts as shift supervisor for night and evening shifts: Create switching orders, approve customer three phase requests, resolve construction scheduling conflicts, schedule and lead switching meetings, manage dept. work and OT, and develop incident reports.

Skills and Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Must have a two year degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field
  • At least 6 years of experience, prefer electrical and/or dispatch related experience (i.e., substation, hydro steam, engineering, line, etc.)
  • Successful completion of AVANGRID Operator Selection and Assessment Examination


  • Supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), OMS (Outage Management System) and GIS (Geographic Information System)
  • Familiarity with OSHA electric safety standards and switching and tagging procedures
