Job Description

Responsibilities

Perform detailed, complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology, principles and other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems and/or to improve processes/services including development of cost effective non-wires alternatives to electric distribution capital budgeted projects. Solves complex distribution system problems. Utilizes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. e.g., voltage issues, area planning studies. Proactively studies and reports on the status of all distribution system facilities in assigned geographical area of responsibility on an established repeating cycle. Assigned area may include multiple OPCOs. Studies to include but not limited to, thermal loading, distribution automation, N-1 analysis, large scale customer load additions.

Develop and prepare documentation (e.g. need statement, project scope, schematics, one-line diagrams) using depth and breadth of expertise in own discipline regarding assignments of complex level of difficulty. Responsible for maintaining and prioritizing a 10 year plan of capital projects for assigned area.

Responsibilities (Cont)

Serve as SME on assigned demonstration projects, initiatives and teams across Avangrid. Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements on distribution planning issues. Participate in Industry associations. Lead teams, mentor & review engineering work of others.  Anticipate/make recommendations with respect to customer & stakeholder needs. Explain difficult concepts & influence others. May be required to make presentations to regulatory/public entities. Assist in guiding & mentoring engineers in planning design and engineering development. Manages & provides direction for resources outside of the department. Leads others to specify & design systems to resolve complex problems in nonstandard situations & develop creative solutions including the development of cost effective non-wires alternatives to electric distribution capital budgeted projects. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & Avangrid policies/procedures.

Development of scoping documents for distribution system improvement projects and proposed solutions for identified distribution issues falling outside of established distribution planning criteria, including recommendations for new distribution substations and pgrade/replacement of existing distribution substation transformers and equipment.

Responsibilities (Cont)

Proficient at utilizing computer aided analysis tools to identify system deficiencies and plan for system reinforcements. Perform engineering analysis for locating and determining the settings for distribution automation equipment. Review complex applications of distributed generation and perform system impact studies.  Can serve as Department leader in the absence of the Manager of Electric Distribution Planning. Assists during storm restoration.

Skills and Requirements

Education: BS/BA Degree

Experience: 5 - 7 years

PE License: Required

Requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET (or equivalent) accredited college/university experience performing engineering duties. An advanced graduate level engineering degree or specialized advanced training (e.g. PTI, ECNE PUI) is preferred.  Possess a depth and breath of experience in Engineering and knowledge of internal/external business and regulatory issues. Maintains knowledge of leading edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations. Able to explain difficult concepts and influence others to lead change. Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities. Able to work in a cross-functional teams across Avangrid OpCos as a subject matter expert (SME) and guide or mentor other team members.
