Description

Purpose:The engineer will lead teams/projects that solve complex problems taking a broad perspective to identify innovativesolutions. Able to work independently with guidance on only the most complex tasks. Participates and representsAvangrid on Industry associations. Follow updates in research and developments taking place in the powerindustry, through training and industry associations and committees. Applies established distribution criteria anduses sound utility engineering practices to identify deficiencies in the distribution system. Utilizes complex computeraided analysis tools to develop cost efficient wire and non-wire alternative solutions to known distribution systemdeficiencies. Studies new distributed generation interconnection applications and performs system impact studies.Assists Distribution Engineers and Field Planners in evaluating system reliability and new service requirements.Acts as a technical leader in the Electric Distribution Planning group to direct, oversee and mentor other PlanningEngineers in the Department.

Key Responsibilities:Perform detailed, complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology, principlesand other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems and/or to improveprocesses/services including development of cost effective non-wires alternatives to electric distribution capitalbudgeted projects. Solves complex distribution system problems. Utilizes a broad perspective to identify innovativesolutions. e.g., voltage issues, area planning studies. Proactively studies and reports on the status of all distributionsystem facilities in assigned geographical area of responsibility on an established repeating cycle. Assigned areamay include multiple OPCOs. Studies to include but not limited to, thermal loading, distribution automation, N-1

analysis, large scale customer load additions.

Develop and prepare documentation (e.g. need statement, project scope, schematics, one-line diagrams) usingdepth and breadth of expertise in own discipline regarding assignments of complex level of difficulty. Responsiblefor maintaining and prioritizing a 10 year plan of capital projects for assigned area.

Duties: Serve as SME on assigned demonstration projects, initiatives and teams across Avangrid. Interpretinternal/external business issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements on distributionplanning issues. Participate in Industry associations. Lead teams, mentor & review engineering work of others.Anticipate/make recommendations with respect to customer & stakeholder needs. Explain difficult concepts &influence others. May be required to make presentations to regulatory/public entities. Assist in guiding & mentoringengineers in planning design and engineering development. Manages & provides direction for resources outside ofthe department. Leads others to specify & design systems to resolve complex problems in nonstandard situations &develop creative solutions including the development of cost effective non-wires alternatives to electric distributioncapital budgeted projects. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines &Avangrid policies/procedures.

Development of scoping documents for distribution system improvement projects and proposed solutions foridentified distribution issues falling outside of established distribution planning criteria, including recommendationsfor new distribution substations and upgrade/replacement of existing distribution substation transformers andequipment.

Proficient at utilizing computer aided analysis tools to identify system deficiencies and plan for systemreinforcements. Perform engineering analysis for locating and determining the settings for distribution automationequipment. Review complex applications of distributed generation and perform system impact studies.

Can serve as Department leader in the absence of the Manager of Electric Distribution Planning. Requirements

Qualifications: (minimum qualifications for assignment to this job)

Education: BS/BA DegreeExperience: 5 - 7 yearsPE License: Required

Requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET (or equivalent) accreditedcollege/university experience performing engineering duties. An advanced graduate level engineering degree orspecialized advanced training (e.g. PTI, ECNE PUI) is preferred.

Possess a depth and breath of experience in Engineering and knowledge of internal/external business andregulatory issues. Maintains knowledge of leading edge techniques or technology through participation inprofessional associations. Able to explain difficult concepts and influence others to lead change. Able tocommunicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities. Able to work in a cross-functional teams acrossAvangrid OpCos as a subject matter expert (SME) and guide or mentor other team members.
