Lead Architect - EMS Systems (REN) is a key member of a 24/7 mission critical operations team responsible forproviding the technical support & analytical services for the management, design, specification, configuration,troubleshooting, and support of systems and processes used to operate the AvanGrid Renewable GenerationBalancing Authority (BA).

Under the general direction of the Director of Generation Control Systems, the Lead Architect - EMS Systems iscritical to ensure that Energy Management Systems (EMS) advanced applications used for controlling, monitoring,and studying Balancing Authority system conditions are highly accurate and reliable. The Lead Architect - EMSSystems serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in designing, implementing, and maintaining key real-timesystems, applications, and infrastructure that are required for AvanGrid BA functions, such as RTGEN (AGC),SCADA, SMP, OAG (ICCP), State Estimation (SE), and Real-Time Contingency Analysis (RTCA). This includes alltertiary systems involved such as PDS (Program Development Environment), Modeling systems, and testing andstaging environments. The Lead Architect - EMS Systems, in line with Avangrid’s existing policies and procedures,be responsible for developing/enhancing and/or overseeing all appropriate EMS change control, QA, anddocumentary process and procedures. The Lead Architect - EMS Systems position requires strong power systemsanalysis knowledge and extensive system operations support experience, excellent skills in problem solving,effective communication and teamwork within AvanGrid’s challenging and collaborative environment.

Technology Responsibilities:
• Design, deploy, manage and maintain the necessary EMS systems and architecture to support theCompany’s current and future business goals with the goal of reliable and independent operation of theseenvironments with no outside help.
• Develop, Mentor, Coach, and Train the OT staff in all aspects of EMS systems maintenance, operations, and

• Establish governance processes for technology direction and necessary controls to ensure thatorganizational objectives achieved.
• Assist in establishment and management of an EMS Cyber Security Program & Incident Response program,including written polices and associated OT procedures, standards, regulations and guidelines.
• Establish, manage and monitor an OT related code and configuration change control and changemanagement environments and processes.
• Identify and implement technology trends and platforms to meet both operational needs and control systemneeds.
• Implement technical requirements for all OT and telecommunications technologies.
• Monitor and manage network security, traffic bandwidth and utilization.
• Protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the Company’s Control Technology data and servers.
• Create Incident Response/Disaster Recovery Plans, policies and procedures.
• Evaluate, recommend and implement new and emerging technologies.
• Develop and implement technical solutions related to the organization’s Operational or control system needs.
• As determined by senior management, procure, deploy and support the company’s GE/ALSTOM EMS(Energy Management System) systems containing AGC (Automatic Generation Control) applications andassociated OT infrastructures; including vendor relationships
• Act as the company’s representative to appropriate technology forums and industry work groups
• Work with other senior management, technology leaders, workgroups, forums, as well as organizationalsupervisors and line employees, making recommendations, evaluating needs, coaching, training, andstaffing/resourcing for the enterprise.
• Support other lines of business as needed and assigned.
• Maintain industry recognized professional certification(s) in Information security.
• Consistently demonstrate extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish the Company’s goalswith a high degree of creativity.

Regulatory Responsibilities
• Provide input and guidance to the CIPS and Reliability Standards compliance program as needed.
• Engage appropriate Federal, State and Regional entities and organizations as needed.
• Monitor and provide on-going recommendations to senior management regarding the Company’sparticipation in control systems technologies, business strategy and optimization of asset pool, and othercomponents of company’s initiatives, which are applicable to the Company’s business and when determined by theCompany, and assist in the management of the Critical Infrastructure Protection Standards compliance program forthe EMS systems.

Other Responsibilities
• Provide guidance, coordination and support to the Company’s technical and engineering group(s).

• 20+ years mission-critical expertise supporting an energy control center.
• 15+ years experience managing and configuring communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP, OPC,ICCP, TCP/IP, EIDE.
• 10+ years Balancing Authority (BA) operational experience
• Extensive knowledge of the western interconnect electrical system, as well as the western interconnectoperations.
• 10+ years experience with Reliability Coordinator to BA function interactions
• 10+ years experience maintaining Windows Server/Client operating systems
• 10+ years experience with industrial networking, VLAN’s, NAT’s, Static Routing, etc
• 5+ years experience VMWare virtualization.
• 10+ years experience with Fortran, C++, and ActivePerl
• Extensive knowledge of GE Alstom Energy Management System (e-terrageneration, e-terracomm,e-terracontrol, e-terrascada, e-terrahabitat, e-terrasource, e-terrabrowser)
• Knowledge of OATI’s webAccounting and webTrans.
• Ability to qualify to NERC standards including successful 7 year background investigation and securityreview.
• Proven ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with management, Plant Operations, andtechnical personnel.
• High energy and ability to work with little to no direct supervision.
• Self motivating and have desire to stay abreast of latest systems technologies relating to optimizinggeneration system performance.
• Detailed understanding of NERC / CIP standards.Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
• Background in process control and energy management systems, as related to the Wind Energy Business.
• Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
• Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional (CSSLP)
• Other industry recognized IT/OT security certifications specific to ICS and Cyber Security/Incident Handling.
