JOB TITLE: Distribution Operator


Monitors and operates Avangrid electric distribution and sub-transmission systems; responsible for complying with the Electric Switching and Tagging Rules for the electric distribution and sub-transmission systems; responsible for dispatching and switching activities on a 7x24 basis to maintain system reliability by planning, writing and executing proactive switching procedures, as well as reacting to system disturbances, when they occur; coordinates switching activities with customers, contractors and Operating authorities of other systems to create safe work areas while maintaining system reliability.

1. Monitor and take corrective action for system reliability alarms and events and monitor loading on the electric distribution system.

2. Direct the removal and restoration of Company facilities for maintenance and testing.

3. Develop and implement restoration plans in response to customer outages.

4. Write, check and approve switching orders for scheduled facility outages.

5. Manage the Outage Management System for outage record and reporting.

Skills and Requirements

Education & Experience Required:

• Associates in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in electrical engineering technology with minimum required course work in ac and dc circuits and analysis, electronics, electrical machines, advanced trigonometry, circuit theory, and associated laboratories preferred or:

Successful completion of AVANGRID USA equivalency exam plus five years of Electric Operations experience in transmission or distribution power systems in an Energy Control Center environment.

• Demonstrated excellent, quick learning capacity in academic studies and/or in previous occupations.

• Successful completion of AVANGRID USA Operator Selection and Assessment examination.


• Familiarity with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), OMS (Outage Management System) and GIS

(Geographic Information System)

• Familiarity with OSHA electric safety standards and switching and tagging procedures.


• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

• Basic math skills.

• Knowledge of Distribution overhead and underground networks, including system configuration, devices, and facilities.

• Knowledge of Distribution protection systems.

• Knowledge of power system devices and operating characteristics and technical skills related to understanding energy control and switching.

• Switching and Tagging rules as well as OSHA Safety Standards on electric risk prevention.

• Ability to read and interpret electric maps, schematics, and records.

• Excellent interpersonal skills.

• Proactive oriented.

• Able to travel.

• Able to respond for callouts 24/7, as required.

• Results oriented.
